Dow Rises on First Day of 2026, But No Santa Claus Rally

January 2, 2026: U.S. markets opened the new year on a positive note, though the much-anticipated Santa Claus rally remained absent.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average climbed 319.10 points (0.66%) to 48,382.39, while the S&P 500 edged up 12.97 points (0.19%) to 6,858.47. The Nasdaq Composite dipped slightly, down 6.36 points (0.03%) to 23,235.63.

Investors remain cautious as the new year begins, with mixed global cues and lingering concerns over economic growth tempering enthusiasm.
